What Makes Microdermabrasion So Special?

What makes microdermabrasion so special?  Plenty as it turns out.  The fact is, there are plenty of other options, but microdermabrasion is kind of a “one size fits all” facial that offers great results at a reasonable cost and without a major time commitment.   This is the facial for those who thought they could never get a facial due to finances or time constraints, and little is given when it comes to results.

First off, the procedure is painless.  Some are put off by the “abrasion” part of the term “microdermabrasion.”  Sure, it is abrasive in that thousands of tiny crystals are sloughing off dead, dirty skin cells.  The process is very gentle however, when done correctly.  It does not leave skin red or irritated, and in fact one of the lesser realized benefits is that those who are using retinoid or exfoliating drug treatments can continue to do so after having microdermabrasion.  This is contrary to what happens after a chemical peel, when it is suggested that these treatments be stopped for a period of time.

Even those with very little time to spend on skin care can make time for microdermabrasion.  It takes as little as 30 minutes in most cases, meaning it can be fit into a lunch break.  But what results can realistically be expected?  Truthfully, it is different for each individual as no two people have exactly the same skin.  However, most will generally see improvements in the texture, tone, and color of skin.  Some even see dramatic results in these areas after only one treatment.   Of course, the professional consultation before the treatment begins will give you a better idea of what results you can expect and how many treatments it will take to achieve your personal skin goals.

Other benefits include improvements in oily skin, brightening of dull skin, clearing of clogged pores, reduction in large pores, reduced visibility of minor acne scars, and a reduction in the visibility of fine lines.  There are some lesser known benefits as well, and they do not have anything to do with the skin’s appearance.  The microdermabrasion process has been shown to improve circulation and lymph flow, which is good for the internal health of the skin, and it has been proven to reduce ingrown hairs.

Microdermabrasion has many benefits, but most of them are not unique to the treatment.  Other facial treatments offer similar results, but this one is special basically due to its availability.  It is a lower cost, more convenient alternative to other more invasive facials procedures.  It is also gentler than many of those that offer the same type of results, and has added benefits that those procedures do not.  It offers semi-surgical results without surgery or time off from work, and can even be squeeze in to a work day in most cases, similar to a haircut or a dental cleaning.  Those looking for a way to improve the look and health of their skin without a large investment of money or time will likely find microdermabrasion is an excellent option.
