Laser Resurfacing with the Erbium Fresh Peel

Q:        I have some little areas of loose skin and wrinkles under my eyes that make me look tired. Can you make those go away?

A:        This is an area of concern for many women, and men too. As we age, we loose elasticity and volume in some areas. Under the eyes is a classic spot for tiny wrinkles and loose skin to appear. This problem is common in the neck and décolleté as well.

Previously in this column we’ve discussed using Botox to reduce wrinkles caused by overactive muscles, but wrinkles caused by loose skin require a completely different approach. Sometimes fillers can be used to plump up areas where volume has been lost but for actual skin tightening, nothing beats Laser Resurfacing.

Q:        How does Laser Resurfacing work?

A:        In the skin, elastic molecules called collagen can age and become tired and loose. A laser, focused to the proper wavelength, can breakdown old collagen and can stimulate the body to produce fresh new collagen. The elasticity of the new collagen causes the skin to appear smoother, clearer and more youthful.

Q:        Wait, doesn’t a laser make your face look raw and red for weeks afterward?

A:        That was true for the older CO2 lasers which penetrated deeply into the skin. The newer technologies, however, can focus on just the thinnest most superficial layer of skin. Healing is rapid with minimal discomfort and limited downtime.

At REDBAMBOO Medi•Spa, we have been very impressed with the results we’ve achieved using our Erbium Fresh Peel Laser. The Erbium Fresh Peel produces significantly more tightening and improvement in texture than was ever possible with either Botox or Intense Pulsed Light but without the trauma and downtime associated with deeply penetrating CO2 lasers. We are able to have precise control over the depth of penetration and the energy level of the laser beam which allows us to target the most superficial layer of skin.

Q:        Please be more specific. What’s the downtime?  How long will I be red?

A:        You can have a light superficial Erbium Fresh Peel on Thursday and be back to work by Monday. For a deeper peel, there may be some minimal redness for up to one week. The discomfort is no worse than a mild sunburn.

Q:        What about areas other than my eyes?

A:        The Erbium Fresh Peel can be used to treat the entire face. The neck and décolleté areas respond particularly well to a light resurfacing. Even the back of the hands and the forearms can benefit greatly from the Erbium Fresh Peel.

Very few aesthetic practices in this area have an Erbium Fresh Peel Laser. We at REDBAMBOO Medi•Spa feel very fortunate that we are able to offer this amazing technology to our clients. If you have areas of sun damage or skin laxity, especially around the eyes, the neck or the décolleté, come in for a complimentary consultation to see if the Erbium Fresh Peel can help you look more youthful and refreshed.
