Acne, What Causes it andHow Can I Treat It?

Acne is caused by the over abundance of propioni acnes bacteria that is found in human sebum (oil) on the skin. Heredity plays a significant role in the production of acne. Typically, acne is seen in oilier skin types. Hormones also play a role in the development of acne. Unfortunately, there is no cure for acne. Acne is a condition that has to be managed in order to be one step ahead of it.

Cleansers that contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or a combination of both, are highly effective at reducing the bacteria count on the skin which in turn reduces the chance of an acne breakout. Twice daily cleansing of the skin is all the cleansing that is needed. Cleansing more than twice a day can cause the skin to produce more oil which can lead to more breakouts. Changing the pillowcase 3 to 4 times per week and cleaning off the cell phone screen, can greatly reduce the transference of acne bacteria. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water, taking a probiotic, eating more fruits and veggies, and staying away from high sodium content foods can also lessen breakouts. Deep cleansing European facials, and facial peels can also help to lessen breakouts, improve acne scars, and fade acne marks. One facial is not going to magically get rid of the acne. Bi weekly or monthly Facials, usage of acne skin care products, lifestyle, and managing your stress level, is a multifaceted approach to this condition that will achieve the greatest results and improve overall skin health. More severe cases of acne, such as acne conglobata (a severe cystic nodular type), will require to be under the care of a Dermatologist with possible administration of an oral and/or topical medication.

What Can I do For Vertical Lip Lines?

What Can I do For Vertical Lip Lines?

This is one of the most common questions we receive from our patients.

The depth and severity of vertical lip lines varies from person to person. Vertical lip lines can take years or decades to develop. Vertical lip lines are caused by the function of the orbicularis oris muscle. This strong muscle surrounds the mouth and also forms the majority of the lips. This muscle also controls the shape and the movement of the lips. Typically these lines are formed by the repetitive puckering action of drinking through straws, gum chewing, and smoking. Sun exposure, heredity, lack of exfoliation and moisturization of the skin also contributes to the formation of vertical lip lines.

Softening the strength of the oris muscle by using a neuro modulator like Jeuveau or Botox, followed by outlining the lips with a hyaluronic acid based filler can dramatically improve the look of vertical lip lines. PRP ( Platelet Rich Plasma) with microneedling can help to rebuild collagen in the skin around the mouth for a more rejuvenated appearance. A dedicated skin care regiment to bring nutrients and moisture to the skin is also beneficial for skin health, plumpness, and vitality.

Is There An Alternative to Microdermabrasion?

Procedure of Microdermabrasion.

Is There An Alternative to Microdermabrasion?

In 1985, Microdermabrasion was introduced to the world by Drs. Marini and Lo Brutto in Italy revolutionized skin resurfacing.  By 2005, microdermabrasion was one of the top five aesthetic procedures performed in the U.S. The FDA classifies microdermabrasion machines as Class 1 medical devices, meaning they can be sold without demonstration of clinical efficacy and operated without medical supervision.

In the hands of a skilled Aesthetician, microdermabrasion is a virtually painless, non-invasive procedure that targets dead skin cells while leaving viable cells alone.  Our patients at Red Bamboo report feeling renewed and totally refreshed immediately after treatment.  We use the BellaDerma microdermabrasion machine, which was developed by the original inventor of this type of medical device, physicist Al Metcalf.  It stimulates collagen and can improve the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and acne scarring.

During the procedure, the Aesthetician guides a handheld device over the skin to provide a light, gentle abrasion.  The American College of Dermatology recommends microdermabrasion for acne scars, hyperpigmentation, sunspots, age spots, and dull complexions.  So why would you consider anything but microdermabrasion as a treatment for these issues?  Because science marches on, and new techniques have been developed that are equally effective for most cases, and in some cases can provide even better results.

After beauty home spa procedure woman looks at perfect skin in mirror touch face feels satisfied.

What are some of the top alternatives to microdermabrasion?

In 2015, Red Bamboo began offering a new alternative to microdermabrasion called Diamond Glow Dermalinfusion.  It provides all the benefits of microdermabrasion while it infuses the skin with carefully selected nutrients.  The dermal infusion skin treatment uses the same diamond tip as microdermabrasion to buff away dead skin cells. Still, it is unique in that it simultaneously infuses the skin with nutrient-dense serums specifically designed to revitalize the skin.

Diamond Glow Dermalinfusion Treatments are often called the “lunchtime” Facial rejuvenation treatments because they are quick and require no downtime.  Makeup can be reapplied immediately after the procedure, usually complete in 30 minutes or less. At Red Bamboo Medi Spa, we also include a facial mask, a hand, and arm massage, and warm towels with our Diamond Glow Dermalinfusion treatment for a relaxing, rejuvenating full-hour experience.

Tattoo artists noticed that the skin of their tattooed clients was softer in the area of the tattoo compared to the surrounding skin.  It was determined this was the result of the tiny needle punctures used to apply the ink.  That observation led to the development of micro-needling, where tiny needles are used to penetrate the surface of the skin.  The minor damage the needles cause triggers the skin’s own repair process of producing collagen and elastin, which results in young-looking skin.

Chemical peels are another alternative to microdermabrasion.  Also a minimally invasive facial treatment, chemical peels use a natural chemical solution to reduce the appearance of acne scarring, age spots, and hyperpigmentation.  Light chemical peels typically require a multi-step process where ten-minute treatments are performed monthly until you achieve your desired results.

Thinking About Fillers? Science And Experience Matter.

woman with arrows on her face

If you’re thinking about eliminating volume loss, sagging, and wrinkles in your face with fillers, you’re not alone. According to the 2020 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Americans underwent 15.6 million cosmetic procedures in that year, of which 4.4 million were Botox, Jeuveau, and Xeomin, and 3.4 million were soft tissue fillers. Volume-enhancing fillers like Juvéderm, Belotero, and Radiesse can lift cheeks, minimize deep lines around the nose, fill in hollows under eyes, and even rejuvenate the hands when in the hands of an experienced Aesthetic Physician like Dr. Francis Toscano, M.D., FACEP, Medical Director of Red Bamboo Medi-Spa.

Dr. Toscano has been named a “Master Injector” by Allergan, the maker of Juvéderm, and a “Platinum Level” Injector by Merz, the maker of Radiesse and Belotero. Dr. Toscano has been an aesthetic injector for over 14 years. His expertise is key to improving facial contours with fillers for subtle, natural-looking, and beautiful results.

What are the differences between fillers and neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators (like Botox, Jeuveau, and Xeomin) “freeze” muscles to reduce wrinkles, while fillers smooth out the skin by filling in hollows, volume loss, and deep wrinkles. Due to its ability to store moisture, hyaluronic acid is perfect for giving skin a plump, hydrated look—both in the face and the hands.  Your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid diminishes as you age, so injectable HA helps to replenish and plump up the skin.

Typically, fillers are used in the lower face, in areas where there are wrinkles and volume loss.  Neurotoxins are primarily for the upper face and are used to soften lines between the eyes and lift the brows.  An Aesthetic Physician has a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, and knows which injectable is right for your specific need.

For instance, Juvéderm and RHA(Resilient Hyaluronic Acid) Fillers are good for addressing volume loss in the lips, and marionettes. Belotero offers some unique qualities not found in other fillers. It is thinner, smooth, and completely colorless, making it ideal for filling in fine lines, wrinkles, and etchings. In fact, it is the only filler Dr. Toscano uses for the tear troughs and the hollows under the eyes.  Radiesse and RHA(Resilient Hyaluronic Acid) fillers are the preferred fillers for the elevation of cheeks to correct mid-face volume loss.

What areas are most commonly treated with dermal filler injections

In the face, the most common areas for treatment with facial fillers are the tear troughs (under eyes), the lips, around the mouth, the nose (non-surgical rhinoplasty), the jaw, and the chin. Signs of aging, such as crow’s feet, smile lines, frown lines, and a dimpled chin can be corrected with the proper application of neuromodulators like Botox, Jeuveau, and Xeomin.

Like your face and neck, your hands are likely to become thinner and more wrinkled as you age.  Dr. Toscano was the first physician in Pinellas County to inject filler into the hands. He prefers Radiesse for this treatment, which is delivered through 1.5 cc syringes that provide more volume than other fillers.

How long do fillers last?

Radiesse facial filler can typically last for up to 12 months and sometimes longer. For filler treatment to the lips, a topical numbing cream is applied for 30 minutes prior to treatment as well as the application of ice, and lidocaine is added to the filler for patient comfort. Juvéderm, RHA, and Belotero typically need a maintenance treatment typically from nine to 12 months, while neuromodulators like Jeuveau, Xeomin, and Botox, are usually re-injected every three to four months.  The level of discomfort is very minimal during a neuromodulator treatment due to expert guidance of the tiny needle by a Board-certified Aesthetic Physician like Dr. Frank Toscano.

How To Have A Fulfilling Sex Life At Any Age

Menopause and perimenopause (the years leading up to it) can have a profound effect on a woman’s sex drive.  During this time, estrogen in a woman’s system plummets, which can lower desire and make the vaginal canal dryer and less elastic, which can make intercourse somewhat painful.  According to John Hopkins Medicine, more than a third of women in perimenopause or who are post-menopausal report sexual difficulties, including a lack of sex drive and trouble reaching climax.

But there is a simple, effective, virtually painless way to reverse this trend and enjoy a fulfilling sex life well into your later years.  It’s called the PRP O-Shot.  The PRP O-shot (O stands for orgasm) is a cosmetic procedure where platelet rich plasma, which is centrifuged and separated from your own blood, is injected around the clitoris and within the vaginal walls to promote

blood flow and cell growth.  This increases sensitivity, sexual drive, and enhanced sexual sensation.

What exactly is rich platelet plasma?

Platelet rich plasma is the portion of your blood that contains all the growth factors that help us heal ourselves.  When we are small children and we scraped our knee, a scab is formed and when the scab falls off, there is nice new pink skin that grew in its place.  That healthy new skin was stimulated to form via the platelet rich plasma in your blood.  By isolating and concentrating your PRP, we can use it wherever it’s needed to aid in healing, or in the case of the PRP O-shot, in the restoration of blood vessels and nerves.

But PRP O-shots aren’t just for more mature women.

Many women experience changes in sexual function following pregnancy and the birth of their babies.  Likewise, some women experiencing mild urinary incontinence can see needed relief and fewer leaks after PRP O-shot injections. PRP has been used extensively to treat sports injuries, aid in recovery from surgery, and even treat medical conditions like hair loss

While scientists don’t yet fully understand how it works, it appears that the platelets may have some kind of healing and restorative properties when injected into an injured part of the body by releasing up to 35 different healing substances Trusted Source or growth factors.

Many doctors use PRP to treat muscular wounds and broken bones and claim it greatly speeds healing time.

What does a PRP O-shot entail?

At Red Bamboo Medi Spa, we’ve been providing PRP O-shots since 2010.  In fact, we use rich platelet plasma to rejuvenate skin, soften scars, soothe inflamed tendons, strengthen rotator cuffs, improve the sensitivity of nipples after breast enhancement, and repair defects from over-zealous liposuction.  We are one of the few practices certified by the American Cosmetic Medicine Association to perform the PRP O-shot.

The first step of the PRP O-Shot treatment involves drawing a sample of your blood and isolating PRP via centrifuge, a process that takes roughly 10 minutes to complete. While the blood is being processed, an anesthetic will be applied to the injection site. Once the PRP has been isolated and the treatment area is sufficiently numbed, the PRP is injected into the clitoris and upper vagina through a very fine, thin needle.

The O-shot itself takes only seconds, and the whole procedure, from the time you walk in until the time you walk is out only 20 minutes.  Better yet, you can resume normal activity, including sex, immediately with no downtime.

Find out if you’re a good candidate for the PRP O-shot.

At Red Bamboo Medi Spa, we’re happy to evaluate your concerns and provide recommendations on whether a PRP O-shot would be a good course of treatment for you.  Learn more by visiting www.redbamboomedispa.com.

Forget Everything You Thought You Knew About Liposuction

You take good care of yourself. You eat right. You exercise. Yet, you might still have some stubborn pockets of fat that make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. There’s an easy remedy–SmartLipo. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Liposuction ranks as the second most popular surgical procedure, and SmartLipo is the new gold standard in liposuction.

Liposuction comes with some risks that aren’t present in SmartLipo. Traditional liposuction uses a cannula and physical manipulation to suction fat from beneath the skin. SmartLipo, on the other hand, uses medical lasers to heat and soften or in some cases liquify that fat, making it easier to remove with the cannula, which in turn, results in less bruising and a faster recovery. While traditional liposuction requires the use of compression garments post-procedures for up to six weeks, most SmartLipo patients realize a full recovery in just a couple of days, and typically only need to wear compression garments for about a week.

Red Bamboo Medi-Spa’s Dr. Francis Toscano was awarded Best SmartLipo in Tampa Bay by Dupont Registry Magazine and named a Doctor of Distinction by Tampa Bay Metro Magazine.

Here’s what you can expect

At your initial consultation Dr. Toscano, who has been certified by Cynosure and has performed well over a thousand SmartLipo procedures, will explain in great detail what you can expect to experience during and after the procedures. You will then discuss the areas you want to target with SmartLipo.

On the day of your procedure, we settle you into a tranquil, serene setting with soothing music playing, stunning artwork on the walls, and the light calming scent of lavender aromatherapy (or your preference of essential oil) perfuming the room. Dr. Toscano’s then numbs the area, makes a tiny incision about the size of the tip of a pencil, and aestheticizes the area under the skin. There is no need for any IV or general anesthesia, only local anesthesia is used. Once the area is totally numb, Dr. Toscano expertly guides a fiber optic thread about the size of a piece of spaghetti that targets the laser’s energy and melts the fat while it tightens the skin. He then painlessly suctions out the softened fat while you relax. You can even enjoy a light snack during the procedure.

(Before and After of SmartLipo at Red Bamboo Medi Spa)

After the procedure.

Dr. Toscano will probably recommend that you wear compression on certain areas treated for a week or less.  You might have minimal bruising or a little soreness in the area, which can usually be controlled with over-the-counter pain relief.  You can resume normal activities in about 24 hours in most cases.

The history of SmartLipo.

In 1975, Drs. Arpad and Giorgio Fisher were the first cosmetic surgeons to perform liposuction.  The father/son duo were the first to use a “blunt” method which allowed them to obtain better and more predictable results with many fewer complications.  Until 1987, liposuction was performed under general anesthesia.  In February of 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the SmartLipo laser for liposuction procedures.  This made the process of removing unwanted fat that’s resistant to diet and exercise, smoothing cellulite, and tightening skin laxity virtually pain-free, minimally invasive, and much easier to recover from.  An added benefit is that SmartLipo is much less expensive than traditional liposuction.
